The trophic basis of fish assemblages in temperate estuarine and coastal ecosystems

چکیده

More than half of the fish biomass coastal rocky reefs depends on zooplankton; however, trophic basis estuarine assemblages remains unknown. We quantified (i.e. basal energy sources) community inhabiting three habitat types (seagrass, natural reef and artificial reef) in two estuaries, compared with sites. Fish were surveyed Baited Remote Underwater Video (BRUVs) species abundance, richness classified into nine functional feeding groups (6 teleost 3 elasmobranch). Comparable metrics for obtained from published surveys using BRUVs. Using group group-specific diet composition, breakdown sources was calculated a food web analysis. Estuarine habitats had different composition seagrass habitat. The majority supported by detritus (51% Botany Bay) or macrophytes (58% Lake Macquarie). In contrast, zooplankton most (45–59%) at locations, one estuary (35–43%), but not other (33–34%). Trophic pathways which support assemblages, are key identifying mitigation measures can help conserve these populations growing urbanisation estuaries coasts.

Convergence of temperate and tropical stream fish assemblages

The hypothesis of convergence takes the deterministic view that community (or assemblage) structure can be predicted from the environment, and that the environment is expected to drive evolution in a predictable direction. Here we present results of a comparative study of freshwater fish assemblages from headwater streams in four continents (Europe, North America, Africa and South America), wit...

The Trophic Structure of Coral Reef Fish Assemblages:"trophic Spectra" as Indicators of Human Disturbances

Ecosystem indicators were investigated through the study of the trophic structure of reef fish assemblages, in separate coral reef ecosystems of the south-west lagoon of New Caledonia. In a first step, a fractional trophic level was assigned for each fish species. Abundances profiles along trophic levels were subsequently plotted in order to search for trophic changes under various level of fis...

Novel Ecosystems: Altering Fish Assemblages in Warming Waters

The effects of increasing sea temperatures extend far beyond changes in species' distributions. By altering local fish abundances, temperature changes will have profound effects on the structure, functioning and services of marine ecosystems.

Differences in juvenile trophic niche for two coastal fish species that use marine and estuarine nursery habitats

In coastal regions, age-0 juveniles of many fish species are capable of recruiting to either marine or estuarine nursery habitats, yet the ecological consequences for cohorts that use marine versus estuarine nurseries is poorly understood. In the present study, stable isotope (δ13C, δ15N) and stomach contents data were used to compare trophic ecology associated with differential habitat use for...
